Think Summer 2020!

CAHOOTS math and language arts in one book … great value! 

Parents, it is time to start thinking about summer and how you will help your children keep their math and language arts skills sharp.  CAHOOTSis a workbook correspondence program for math and language arts, designed to more closely match our district curriculum through an engaging and reflective approach to learning.  CAHOOTSshould not be considered as a replacement for participating in summer school, if a child qualifies.  CAHOOTSregistration information will be sent home with students the week of March 2.  Sample workbooks will be available for review in the school office in February/March.  The deadline for registration is April 3.  Cost is $42.  Watch for more information later this winter.

Girls on the Run is coming to Red Pine!
Girls on the Run is an afterschool program like no other!  Twice per week for 10 weeks, girls will have fun, make friends, increase their physical activity levels and learn important life skills.  Trained and caring coaches lead grade 3-5 girls through interactive lessons and running activities.  No running experience necessary.

We will begin the week of March 16^th, meeting every Tuesday and Thursday from 3:45pm - 5:15pm.  The season ends with a noncompetitive 5K event.  Online registration opens February 1^st and closes February 8^th.  Our team maximum is 20 girls.  If more register, selection will be based on a lottery.  To learn more and to register, visit us at  WWW.GOTRTWINCITIES.ORG

Volunteers needed for our Scholastic Book Fair over conferences Wednesday, 2/12 - Thursday, 2/13 in the Red Pine Elementary Library.

We have volunteer spots open for set-up - the day before the Book Fair on Tuesday, 2/11 @ 3:30.  And we have volunteer spots for Wednesday (4 pm - 8 pm) and Thursday (12 pm - 8 pm) when the Book Fair is open.

In the past some Red Pine Cardinals have come back to fulfill volunteer hours for middle school / high school- which we love! Please spread the word!

“Every Minute Counts” Reading Challenge”

Our school will be challenging several neighboring schools in a “Time to Read” competition. Red Pine students are to record reading minutes from Feb 5- Feb 20using yellow reading record and drawing slips that are coming home in Friday Folders today.  Last year’s winner was Shannon Park and other past winners include Westview and Highland Elementary.  Maybe Red Pine can bring home the trophy this year?!  Please contact the Library for more information.

Dress Like Your Favorite Book Character Day - Friday, February 28
On Friday, February 28 all students are encouraged to dress up as his / her favorite book character.  Please stay tuned for more info in your child's Friday Folder.

Do you know a child who could benefit from free dental care?
Right now volunteers across the state are working hard to get ready for Give Kids a Smile. We need your help to get the word out! 
WHAT IS IT?
Give Kids a Smile is a free charitable dental event, brought to you by Minnesota Dental Association and the Minnesota Dental Foundation, for kids (typically ages 3-18) who face barriers to accessing dental care. 
WHEN IS IT?
February 7 and 8, 2020 
(Note: Some clinics may have alternative dates.)
LOCATION?
Volunteer dental clinics statewide.
HOW ARE APPOINTMENTS MADE? 
After January 1, parents can locate a participating clinic by visiting www.mndental.org or by calling United Way 2-1-1 (simply dial 2-1-1). They can then contact the clinic directly to schedule an appointment.

National African American Parent Involvement Day Information Night
The African American CFA’s are hosting an information night for families and friends of African American Students in district196 on February 6^thfrom 5:30pm - 7:30pm at Oak Ridge Elementary.  At the meeting there will be resources for families and information about National African American Parent Involvement Day February 10^th.

There will also be activities for the kids!

Engaging in Family Digital Conversations 
The use of technology continues to increase in our daily lives which can bring both opportunities and challenges. How might we engage in conversations and take actions steps around balancing our technology use, make positive decisions, and recognize when it would be helpful to put it away or aside? Learn strategies to engage in these conversations, how to establish a family media plan, and discover possible tools to monitor and manage your child’s technology use.  

Mark Aronson, District 196 Learning and Technology/Math Coach, has an MA in elementary education from Rockhurst University, and Jenny Huling, District 196 Teaching and Learning Specialist, has an MA in Learning Technology from the University of St Thomas. Both have been instrumental in the implementation and training of the one-to-one technology initiative in District 196.
